Where is she from? Although people often depict her as a New Yorker, she was actually born in Sherman Oaks, California, just over the hill from Hollywood and Los Angeles. Because she is from San Fernando Valley, Angelenos like to call her a Val (valley gal). Meanwhile her ancestors, including her father, are from Greece. The name Aniston doesn't sound Greek to me! It was coined when Jennifer's grandfather first moved to America from Greece. He decided that his name Anistonapoulos was practically unpronouncable. One day he drove through the city of Anniston in Alabama and decided that it sounded close enough to his name. He chopped off an N from the city's name, and since then Aniston has been Jennifer's family name. Many people spell her name as Jennifer Anniston (as in the city), and that is wrong, because that completely takes Jennifer's ancestry away. How did she end up becoming a New Yorker? Her family had financial difficulties and Jennifer ended up living with her grandmother in Greece for a year. The family, and Jennifer, relocated to New York City when her father landed a TV role in "Love of My Life." Jennifer's childhood was nothing like the spoiled suburban life that her "Friends" character, Rachel Green, enjoyed. Tell me about Jennifer's family. Her father is John Aniston, who can be seen on NBC's "Days of Our Lives." Jennifer was the child from his marriage to ex-model Nancy, who reared Jennifer after their divorce. Jennifer has an older brother, John Melick, and a half-brother, Alex, born in 1989 from John's new marriage. Godfather Telly Savalas was a big source of motivation in Jennifer's decision to pursue acting. Becoming an actress When did Jennifer first become a TV actress? Her first TV role was in a short-lived series called "Molloy" which aired in 1989. What other shows did she star in? She was also a star in "Ferris Bueller," "The Edge" and "Muddling Through" in the early 1990's. None of these shows made it big though, and Jennifer did not become a major star until her latest TV project, "Friends," became a hit. Does Jennifer star in movies as well? Yes, Jennifer is not a stranger to the silver screen! Her first movie was "Leprechaun," in which she, as Tory, tried to fight off evil leprechauns. In August 1996 she starred in another movie called "She's The One," as a wife virtually ignored by her husband. She has shot three other movies, called "Dreams for an Insomniac," "Picture Perfect," and "Till There Was You." These movies will be released over the next year or so. Jennifer likes to participate in these movie projects to give herself more experience and expand her acting capabilities. Any other projects? She co-starred with Matthew Perry to show her computer expertise in the Windows 95 Video Guide. She can also be seen on a CD-ROM based game, called Director's Chair, which lets you produce a movie with guidance from Steven Spielberg. Friends How did Jennifer get involved in this project? The producers picked her out as Monica. Then why is she Rachel? Jennifer decided that Rachel was a much better role for her. Don't you think Jennifer is better off as Ross's girlfriend than as his sister? How does Jennifer compare with her character? They are in many ways similar, but Jennifer doesn't care as much about clothes, accessories, and other snobby stuff as Rachel does. Also Jennifer is not as dumb as Rachel (otherwise she wouldn't be a star today :-) ). How is Jennifer doing with her costars? She bought a new home in Hollywood Hills, California, in 1995. The address is secret though, so don't bother to ask. What does she drive? A black Land Rover Discovery. The bumper is probably mangled because Jennifer is reputed to be a horrible driver. Jennifer herself denies this though, saying that she has had only one accident ever. What does Jennifer like to do when she is not busy? Jennifer doesn't have much time at her own disposal, but she tries to work on art projects whenever she can. Her specialties are charcoal paintings and clay sculptures. Jennifer could've become an artist then, right? Possible, but Jennifer says she wanted to be a therapist if her career plans as an actress failed. What else does Jennifer like to do? Jennifer is a nature lover. She likes to go hiking or do anything else that brings her close to nature. I heard that she smokes. Right? Yes, she occasionally smokes cigars. After all nobody is perfect, including Jennifer, who is called by some "the modern reincarnation of Athena." Well, the Greek deities were not perfect either. Also, in "She's The One" you can see Jennifer smoking cigarettes more or less constantly. What does Jennifer think of the impact of her haircut? Jennifer says that she just wanted something different and ended up getting "The Do." She got sick of seeing everyone copy her haircut and now breathes a sigh of relief as fewer people copy her style. She changed her hairstyle herself with longer hair. What is Jennifer's personality like? Jennifer describes herself as being curious, caring, and fun. Others often describe her as a party pig and a tomboy. In any case, she has a very charming personality for sure. How did Jennifer trim herself down to current levels and how does she keep herself in shape? She once was at a voluptuous 140 lb., and that was not that long ago. But once she had to go to an audition in leotards and tights, and after that experience, she decided to lose weight. Through a carefully controlled diet (and nowadays two professional trainers) she has lost 30 pounds, and since then she's been treated completely differently in Hollywood. Jennifer's focus is to keep herself healthy, rather than thin. That is why she is not as thin as Courteney Cox, to the dismay of some. Will we get to see her nude? Has she posed nude already? If you are thinking of seeing her nipples or her genitalia then forget about it. But she has been photographed naked a couple of times in February 1996, in US and Rolling Stone. About nudity in movies, Jennifer says no unless "absolutely necessary," and so far she has not encountered such situations. We will have to wait and see how Jennifer responds when she's offered a role involving nudity. Is Jennifer on the Internet? Yes, Jennifer maintains an account at America Online. She uses it to try out the Internet and find out what the computer can do to enhance her life.
